Almost everyone of us experiences the vitality of the sidewalk, whether we are pedestrians or drivers on the road.  The sidewalk is the city’s most public place where we rush, bump into friends or just simply take a stroll.  The importance of the street furniture that we come across on the sidewalks form a fabric in the city to, not only interweave into our lifestyles, but also contribute to the vibrancy of the street.  The biggest and probably the most affecting street furniture is the bus shelter, where one of the early intentions is for a place to wait for buses.  It still is, except the lifestyles and expectations of commuters have changed.  Most bus shelters have adopted a rectangular format and become mass-produced on various positions on the streets.  However, the constantly changing lifestyles require us to be always on the move, and have things around us within reach.  The design scheme of the bus shelter and canopy entrance aims to integrate our lifestyles with mobility by injecting a multitude of uses into a single entity, responding to the needs of every individual.

The engagement between the Museum-Bridge of La Academia and the urbanscape is not based on being the same but on a mutually enriching relationship of difference.  Like the metaphor of restoring a Greek vase, we are interested in putting the fragments together and filling in the blanks, giving them the significance back as a whole without copying and imitating the surrounding detail.

Inside, the bridge advances out to the urbanscape by the wonderful properties of simplicity, translucency and reflection that come from the glazed skin, similar to the water of the Grand Canal that reflects the fabric of city; the urbanscape is ‘borrowed’ literally inside the form. The three exhibition galleries inside reconfigurate to tell the stories of Venice’s past and future, alongside the reality of the present.
